My fine coworkers BG and CE shared a secret with me - the early bird dinner special at Home Restaurant. This fabulous deal includes a three-course prix fixe menu & glass of wine all for $10.99, but it is only offered from 5-6pm.
They pour a very generous glass of wine, I might add… The restaurant was relatively quiet at 5:00 when they first opened, and we enjoyed excellent service in the back covered patio near a cozy fireplace that was blazing cheerily.
The restaurant interior is upscale diner with bright windows around the room, and I have to mention the bizarre sinks in the restroom, which are troughlike and I’m not sure what the point is… The menu is modern comfort food with clever twists and turns, and serves brand name natural meats (Niman and Meyer Ranches, Fulton Valley Farms chickens).
Besides the 3 course meal, we split the Macaroni and Cheese with a crunchy topping of rye bread crumbs, grated parmesan cheese and a few sliced scallions. The noodles were big ridged curlicues covered with sharp cheddar cheese sauce. I think it might have been improved with a couple minutes under the broiler, but we ate it all the same…

The Arugula Salad with Fennel and Walnut Vinaigrette was lightly dressed and a little plain, could have been zipped up with fresh herbs or a bit of cheese or something…

The entree was Sliced Roast Turkey with Mashed Potatos and Gravy, which was an odd orange color, but tasted good and was perfect on the turkey. The mashed potatoes were luscious with a clean flavor.

Dessert was Bread Pudding with Caramel Sauce, made from challah and topped with a billowy cloud of fresh whipped cream. Mmmm, the bread was dense and crunchy on the edges, and there was plenty of sauce to scoop over everything.

The restaurant was bustling by the time we were finished, but my water glass was well tended and our waiter checked in every so often to make sure we were still happy. I had a very nice dinner for an amazing price, it’s worth the effort to get there early.
I must try the duck and vegetable spring rolls with a spicy chili dipping sauce the next time…
